The controversy over Fuzzy Zoeller's racial remarks about Tiger Woods, which resulted in Kmart's dropping Zoeller as its golf spokesman on Tuesday, escalated yesterday when the golfer pulled out of the Greater Greensboro Classic.
''I have to make things right with Tiger first before anything else,'' an apologetic Zoeller said in a statement in which he said he had not talked to Woods about his televised remarks.
In a taped interview that was shown on CNN on Sunday, Zoeller called Woods a ''little boy'' and urged him not to request fried chicken and collard greens at next year's Champions Dinner at the Augusta National Club. In an initial apology on Monday, and again yesterday, Zoeller said he was joking.
Zoeller's remarks are the latest to raise concerns about racial and ethnic insensitivity among public figures in sports.
Last month, Nets Coach John Calipari apologized after calling a reporter a ''Mexican idiot,'' and David Halberstam, a Miami Heat radio announcer, made a bizarre connection between modern basketball and Thomas Jefferson's slaves. Both were fined by National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern.
