Five Members of British Family Die in Car Crash on Pilgrimage To Mecca But One Year old Baby Survives, Five members of a British family were killed in a car crash on a pilgrimage to Mecca - but a one-year-old baby miraculously survived in the wreckage.

The three generations of the family were making the 3,000 mile trip to Saudi Arabia for the religious journey when their taxi crashed.

The only survivor of the horror smash was Mohammed Eisa Danial Hayat, one, who lost both his parents, grandparents and aunt in the crash. Baby Mohammed was found being cradled in the arms of his dying grandfather in the crash.

Grandfather Shaukat Ali Hayat, 56, his wife Abida, 47, and their children, Mohammed Isshaq Hayat, 33, and Saira Zenub Hayat, 30, died in the smash.

Grandmother Abida Hayat was killed in the crash along with five family members

Little Mohammed mother Bilques, 31, who was pregnant and was due to give birth in two months, was also killed in the accident. Great-uncle Sma Hayat, 58, told how they believe grandfather Mr Hayat saved the baby in the crash as the taxi veered off the road to smash into a concrete bridge in Saudi Arabia.

He said: 'He saw what happened as the car went out of control. He grabbed the baby, clutched him in his and cushioned him, his actions saved his life. The boy has lost everyone but luckily he has pulled through.'

The family had travelled from their home in Newport, South Wales for the religious ceremony.

They were making the Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca because pharmacist Saira was due to be married this weekend.

The family took a taxi from Mecca to meet relatives in the city of Jeddah when the smash happened on route 40 between the two cities.

Sma said how the last communication received from the family was a text from Saira to her sister saying the taxi was going 'too fast'.
